Quiz Contest is one of the competitions in English Weekwhere students will have the opportunity to improve their knowledge in English language. Through Quiz Contest, students are expected to be more insightful regarding to the English Language.

Place: Faculty of Languages and Arts, State University of Surabaya

RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF PARTICIPANTS

  1. This competition is available for active junior high school students in Surabaya.
  2. Each group consists of three students.
  3. Each school may send five teams for maximum.
  4. The participant may join more than one competitions in English Week XXIV, but the issue regarding the timetable of the competitions are not committees’ responsibility.
  5. Participant is expected to come at least 30 minutes before the competition starts to complete the second registration.
  6. The second registration will be opened at 6:30 a.m. – 7:30 a.m., and cannot be represented by anyone else.
    • All participants have to complete the second registration as the requirement to enter the competition room. The participant who has not completed the second registration is not allowed to enter.
    • The competition will be started at 8:30m.
  7. Participant who comes late is still allowed to join the competition without any additional time.
  8. The participant who does not attend second registration will be disqualified.
  9. If the participantsdo not come on the day of the competition, they will be considered withdrawing themselves from the competition (the registration fee cannot be refunded).
  10. Participants must wear an ID card andcontestant number during the competition. These will be given on second registration.
  11. Participants must wear school uniform.
  12. Participants must obey every rule of English Week XXIV competitions.

REGULATION

  1. There will be a briefing before the first round where the participants get the general clue of the quiz.
  2. Quiz will be divided into three rounds:
    • Round 1:
      • Written Quiz (50 questions, 100 minutes)
      • Each class consists of 5 teams with 2 classkeepers.
      • Scoring isbased on:
        • Correct answer : 3 points
        • Wrong answer : 1 point
        • No answer : 0 point
    • 9 teams will go to the next round based on the following:
      • The highest score of the test.
      • In case there are 2 teams with the same score, the team going to the next round is the fastest one submitting the answer.
    • Participants must fill the answer as clear as possible.
    • Ambiguity in answering will be considered as wrong answer.
    • Answers will be screened by Assessor Team from the committee.
    • Participants are only allowed having a discussion with their own team.
    • Any form of communication during the test is prohibited.
    • Participants must remain silent during the test.
    • Only stationaries are on the desk.
    • Participants are allowed to submit the answer sheet before the given time.
    • Both answer sheet and question sheet should be returned to the committee.
    • There are two liaison officers in each class.
    • Every participants must obey the liaison officers’ decissions.
    • Participants are not allowed to leave the class without any permission from the liaison officers.
    • Committes have rights to disqualifythe participant who disobey the rules.
    • Judges’ final decision CANNOT be changed.
    • Round 2:
      • Spoken Quiz (20 questions, ±30 minutes)
      • The quiz will be divided into three sessions with 3 teams each; the sequence is based on the participant’s number.
      • There will be 3 supervisors.
      • Questions are based on the overview given to the participants.
      • The questions will be displayed on the LCD for 30 seconds.
      • The team answering the question is the one who push the bell first.
      • The team has 1 chance to answer the questions within 5 seconds.
      • If one team fails to answer, the question will be offered to the other teams without point reductions.
      • The unanswered questions will be deleted.
      • In case of ambiguity, the decisions will be taken by the liaison officers.
      • Scoring is based on:
        • Correct answer : 3 points
        • Wrong answer : 0 point
      • 3 teams will go to the final round based on the following:
        • The highest score of the test.
        • In case there are 2 teams with the same score, 1 additional questions will be given.
      • Every participant must obey the liaison officers’ decisions.
    • Final Round:
    • Spoken Quiz (±15 questions, 25 minutes)
    • Questions are based on the overview given to the participants.
    • The teams will take the sequence number.
    • Each team will be given 5 questions to answer; and additional 10 questions to be competed.
    • The questions will be displayed on the LCD for 30 seconds.
    • The team answering the question is the one who push the bell first.
    • The team has 1 chance to answer the questions within 5 seconds.
    • If one team fails to answer, the question will be offered to the other teams without point reductions.
    • The unanswered questions will be deleted.
    • Scoring isbased on:
      • Team questions : 5 points for correct answer
      • Additional questions : 3 points for correct answer
    • The winners are based on the following:
      • The highest score of the round
      • In case there is team with the same score, there will be 3 additional questions to decide the winners.
    • Judges’ final decision CANNOT be changed.

MATERIAL OVERVIEWS

  1. First Round (Written Quiz) will be related with Grammar stuff which is suitable for Junior High School student’s ability, such as Tenses (Simple Present, Simple Past, Present Continuous, Past Continuous, Present Perfect, Past Perfect and Simple Future), Nouns, Pronouns, Articles, Adjectives, Prepositions, Question Words, Degree of Comparison, Modals, Passive Voice and so on.
  2. Second and Third Round (Spoken Quiz) will be related with Grammar (as seen above) and the general knowledge about America, Australia and United Kingdom such as:
    • History, includes the history of the country, Kings and Queens in change, history in world war, the history of iconic building of each country, the location of the building and other memorial history;
    • Traditional Culture, includes the traditional house and dance of each country, traditional food and the customs;
    • Pop Culture, includes music and its musician, plays and films, the artists and famous masterpieces of those country.

Attention

  1. Make sure all the registrants’ names written in the registration form are correct (full name) according to the name written on the students’ ID card.
  2. The submitted name CANNOT be changed. Any kinds of misspelling / writing errors are not the responsibility of committee.
  3. The name written on the certificate is according to the one written in the registration form. Once again, the committee will not be responsible if the participant’s name written on the certificate turns out to be wrong.
