DESCRIPTION

English Speech Competition is aimed to develop participants’ skill in public speaking and stating their arguments. This competition allows students to overcome their fear of speaking in public. Main Theme: Enhancing Global Generations’ Intercultural Literacy for Better Humanity Sub Theme: Involving Sense of Humanity in Global Generation’s Life. Topic:
  1. Preliminary Round:
    • The Importance of Intercultural Literacy for the Young Generation.
    • b. How Tolerance can be applied in the Global Generation
    • c. Unite the Differences through Media Social.
  2. Final Round: will be given on the spot

RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF PARTICIPANTS

  1. This competition is an East Java open competition which is available for active senior high school students.
  2. Each school may send 5 students for maximum.
  3. The participant may join more than one competition in English Week XXIV, but the issue regarding the timetable of the competitions are not committees responsibility.
  4. Participant is expected to come 30 minutes before the competition starts to complete the second registration.
  5. The second registration will be opened at 6:30 a.m. – 7:30 a.m., and cannot be represented by anyone else.
    • All participants have to complete the second registration as the requirement to enter the competition room. The participant who has not completed the second registration is not allowed to enter.
    • The competition will be started at 8:00 a.m.
  6. Participant who comes late is still allowed to do second registration, but must accept if they get the last sequence.
  7. The participant who does not attend second registration will be disqualified.
  8. If the participants do not come on the day of the competition, they will be considered withdrawing themselves from the competition (the registration fee cannot be refunded).
  9. Participants must wear an ID card and contestant number during the competition. These will be given on second registration.
  10. Participants must wear formal attire (besides school uniform).
  11. Participants must obey every rule of English Week XXIV competition

REGULATION

  1. There will be two rounds in English Week Speech Competition:
    1. Preliminary round:
      • All participants must deliver a speech about one of the topics based on the topic that they have picked.
      • Each participant will be given 5 minutes of minimum time and 7 minutes of maximum time to deliver the speech.
      • The participants will be separated into two rooms with two judges for each class.
      • Plagiarism is prohibited. The speech delivered must be originally made by the participants. The participants can look for models of speech performances or references and sources, but they are not allowed to copy the content of the speech.
      • The participants will be called to the room (A/B), while the rest of the participants will wait in the participant room.
      • The competition will be divided into two sessions in each room.
      • The participants will be called maximum 3 times when their time to perform has arrived. If the participants do not answer or do not present, they will get the last turn to perform.
      • There will be 5 participants selected from each room to compete in final round.
      • Warning Signs:
        • Green paper means 5 minutes of performance has passed.
        • Yellow paper means 1 minute left.
        • Red paper means the maximum time is over and the participant must stop deliver their speech.
    2. Final round:
      • The participants will have 5 minutes of minimum time and 7 minutes of maximum time for “impromptu speech” challenge and 3 minutes of Question and Answer session.
      • There will be three topics that given on the spot and the participants are allowed to choose one of those topics.
      • The participants will have 15 minutes for the preparation. Sources can be from internet.
      • The participants are allowed to look for references/sources from Internet, but not to copy the whole content.
      • There will be 4 judges in final round.
  2. Scoring will be done based on:
    1. Preliminary round:
      • Language Use (words choice, sentence patterns and pronunciation)
      • Delivery (timing, gestures, eye contact, voice volume and intonation)
      • Content (the suitability of the speech with the topic (does not offend others)
      • Organization (organize the structure or sequence of the speech from beginning to the end)
    2. Final Round:
      • Language Use (words choice, sentence patterns and pronunciation)
      • Delivery (timing, gestures, eye contact, voice volume and intonation)
      • Content [the suitability of the speech with the topic (does not offend others)]
      • Organization (organize the structure or sequence of the speech from beginning to the end)
  3. Comprehension (the ability to understand the content of the speech) The judges’ final decision CANNOT be changed.

  3. Third Winner: Trophy + Certificate + Merchandise + IDR. 1,000,000,-
  4. First Runner-up: Trophy + Certificate + Merchandise + IDR. 500,000,-
  5. Best Couple: Trophy+ Certificate + Merchandise + IDR 300,000,-
  6. Participants who entered Top Ten will get special certificate.

Attention

  1. Make sure all the registrants’ names written in the registration form are correct (full name) according to the name written on the students’ ID card.
  2. The submitted name CANNOT be changed. Any kinds of misspelling / writing errors are not the responsibility of committee.
  3. The name written on the certificate is according to the one written in the registration form. Once again, the committee will not be responsible if the participant’s name written on the certificate turns out to be wrong.
